About Book
This volume investigates Alice Boner’s early life and artistic practice and critically assesses her sculptural work beyond a mythologization. It makes extensive use of the artist’s unpublished personal writings—diaries, letters, and papers preserved in her archive at the Museum Rietberg in Zurich—which offer unique socio-historical insights into the career of a Swiss woman artist and the obstacles and challenges she encountered. Alice Boner forged a life as an emancipated woman, and yet as this study makes clear, she perpetuated conservative modes of expression in her work.
About Author
Sarah Rageth studied Art History in a Global Context and German Literature at Queen Mary University of London and the universities of Basel and Zurich. She worked as an assistant curator and as a researcher at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich and the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW). Her scholarly focus is the history of Swiss women artists, primarily sculptors, and architects in the twentieth century. The present volume is based on her master’s thesis, which was submitted to the University of Zurich in 2021.
